Kraft Foods Inc. plans to
double the whole grain content of its Nabisco crackers
brands by 2013, the company
said. Nabisco crackers will
contribute more than 9 billion
servings of whole grains to
American diets each year.
First rumors, then confirmation in early August that Russia would ban grain exports
from Aug. 15 through the
end of 2010 due to extreme
drought sent U.S. wheat futures prices skyrocketing, then
tumbling back to earth with
limit losses in the same week.

Fuel surcharges equating to
5% of freight rates on truck
flour shipments have been
announced by flour milling
companies. The surcharge
was imposed in order to pass
on higher freight rates resulting from the surge in fuel
costs triggered by developments in the Middle East.

Mrs. Clara Gebhard Snyder,
director of foods and nutrition
of the Wheat Flour Institute,
has resigned from the post.
A truck for the transportation
of flour in bulk has been developed by Spillers, Ltd. The
vehicle, the first such truck in
England, has a capacity for 8¼
tons and was developed by
Spillers with the encouragement of several large bakery
customers of the company.
Asserting that "certainly no
one is hoarding bread, yet
prices have advanced from 1c
to 3c per loaf," Senator Guy
M. Gillette of Iowa announced
Aug. 10 that his subcommittee on the utilization of farm
crops will launch an intensified investigation of bread
price rises since the start of
the Korean war on June 25.
What was once termed the
"dust bowl" of Kansas is now
being called the "rain bowl" as
a result of the record moisture
received during July. According to H.L. Collins, agricultural statistician, July was the
wettest and coolest in Kansas
since state-wide records were
first compiled in 1887.
In a realignment of the purchasing activities of the Continental
Baking Co, A.G. Hessel has been
appointed director of a newly
formed purchasing division,
effective Aug. 14. The change
was occasioned by the death of
M. Lee Marshall, chairman of the
company, who also held the post
of director of purchases. This
position has been abolished, but
Mr. Hessel becomes director of
