It was about 14 years ago that Wal-Mart
Stores, Inc. thrust the issue of sustainability
into the collective conscience of the packaged
food industry by launching an initiative
requiring the retailer's suppliers to conform to
environmental, social and quality standards.
While there have been pauses and stumbles
in the grain-based foods industry's pursuit of
sustainability since then, the trend continues
to accelerate going into 2020.
Evidence of momentum in the sustainability
trend may be found in a diverse range of stories
in the current issue of this publication. Cargill,
in two separate articles, has announced plans
to cut greenhouse gas emissions in its global
supply chain by 30% per ton of product within
10 years and announced a partnership with
Renmatix, Inc., an innovative business funded by
Bill Gates with technology to turn plant-based
feedstock into upcycled material, including
value-added specialty ingredients. Bunge during
December announced closing a sustainabilitylinked revolving credit facility under which the
interest rate the company pays is tied to Bunge's
sustainability performance. In still another story,
a survey showed a narrowing of the gender gap
within the agri-food sector, important progress
for an industry seeking to attract and retain
talent in a rapidly changing world.
More specifically to sustainability, the
International Food Information Council
Foundation said sustainability and climate
change account for two of the top five trends
in food and nutrition in 2020. There is no
letup in sight to the pressure on grain-based
foods to make further progress. MBN
