Bakery Flour
Bookings of bakery flour were limited
last week, although millers anticipated
an increase in activity before the Christmas break. Price adjustments were mixed
with pan bread flour seeing little change,
spring grades declining largely because
of a drop in the cash spring wheat basis,
and soft flour pricing on the rise.
Individual bakers locked in outstanding components, principally basis, to
wrap up additional contracts for the first
quarter of 2020. One miller commented
the activity resulting in completed contracts equated to about one week's grind.
The cash hard red winter wheat basis
was stubbornly strong, which discouraged bread bakers from assuming a
more aggressive stance. But hopes for
a setback in the cash wheat basis were
wearing thin, and millers expected bakers to begin adding to their second-quarter coverage before the Christmas break.

wheat offers, which may encourage
spring grade buyers to contract supply
more assertively. Distributors, particularly in the Northeast, continued to book
what was required to keep contract balances extended two to three weeks.
Cookie-cracker and specialty bakers
seemed to be the most active, with some
making notable strides in booking supply for the first quarter.

spring grades and 60% to 75% for soft
flour. Second-quarter coverage was estimated from 40% to 50% for pan bread
flour, 35% to 50% for spring grades and
25% to 30% for soft flour. MBN

Family Flour
Sales and shipments of national and
regional brands were steady last week.
Carlot list prices were unchanged.
Flour manufacturers remained busy
packing and shipping last-minute orders
to supermarkets, mass retailers and other principal outlets two weeks ahead of
Christmas. Brisk activity was expected
to ease soon as most outlets took delivery of orders expected to accommodate
holiday promotions.
Business was expected to revert to the
routine in the new year with smaller orders
for the restocking of shelves following the
conclusion of the fall baking season.
National and regional brands could be
found for $2.08 for a 5-lb bag. Holiday
promotions saw one discount grocery
chain selling its private label in 5-lb bags
for 99c.
According to data compiled by Information Resources, Inc., a Chicago-based
market research firm, retail unit sales of
family flour and meal during the 52 weeks
ended Nov. 3, a period that embraced
the runup to the current key baking season, totaled about 240.4 million units,
an increase of 2% from the same span a
year earlier. Dollar sales in the 12-month
span totaled about $746.6 million, which
represented a 4.3% increase from the

Semolina
Bookings of semolina, granulars and
durum flour were light last week. Prices
were raised because of lower millfeed
prices as cash durum prices were unchanged.
Pasta makers' first-quarter semolina
coverage still was estimated at 85%. But
some added to April-June coverage, now
seen at 35%.
The price of choice milling hard amber durum as quoted at the Chicago rail
gateway for delivery beyond remained
$8.60 a bu. The Minneapolis price was
$8.30 a bu.
Elevator managers and merchandisers
have largely wrapped up movement of
time-sensitive supplies, namely durum
for export through the Great Lakes.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture on
Dec. 10 forecast the carryover of durum
on June 1, 2020, at 26 million bus, down
20 million bus from the November projection and down 29 million bus, or 53%,
from 55 million bus in 2019. The smaller
carryover reflected a 10-million-bu reduction in forecast imports to 40 million bus,
and a 10-million-bu increase in forecast
2019-20 durum exports to 35 million bus.
