Bakery Flour
Bookings of bakery flour expanded last
week. Price adjustments were minor except for a hike in spring standard patent.
Most of the week's substantial business was concluded during the first couple of days following Labor Day. Bookings subsided after midweek as wheat
futures advanced from contract lows in
Kansas City and Minneapolis wheat futures and from the lowest levels in Chicago wheat futures since mid-May.
Bakers returned from the holiday
weekend determined to take advantage
of weak wheat futures that took some of
the sting out of carrying charges in both
the futures and cash markets to fill gaps
in October-December coverage and extend contract balances deeper into 2020.
Notable was a more active stance
taken by cookie-cracker and specialty
bakers, whose coverage for the fourth
quarter increased to equal that taken by
bread bakers and spring grade users, by
one miller's accounting. The miller said
soft flour users, grappling with the effects of a short crop with subpar quality
in many regions, sought to "get ahead of
the game" with the effect that their coverage in January-March 2020 expanded
to eclipse that held by pan bread bakers
and specialty bread bakers and other
spring grade flour users.
One miller's balance sheet indicated
bakers' flour coverage for October-December was 70% for each of the grades.
He estimated first-quarter 2020 coverage
at 25% for pan bread flour, 10% for spring

Family Flour
Sales of national and regional brands
of family flour continued to increase seasonally with the school year now begun
nationwide and buyers beginning to turn
their attention to needs for the baking
season. Carlot list prices were unchanged,
but retail pricing of private label flour
was aggressive across several markets.
Private label was offered at Walmart as
low as $1.22 to $1.48 per 5-lb bag. Branded
product was offered as low as $2.38 a 5-lb
bag. This was pricing typically expected
during the height of the baking season.
Most private label buyers have extended their flour coverage through July
2020, which was unusually extensive

grades and more than 45% for soft flour.
Another miller indicated spring grade
users overall were active last week, and
distributors took advantage of weak Minneapolis futures to extend contract balances more than they otherwise would.
Their coverage was about three weeks.
Cash hard red winter wheat premiums
were mostly unchanged last week with
some strengthening at the lower protein
levels. Cash hard red spring wheat premiums were mostly stronger, and mill bids
on soft red winter wheat were firm.
Mill grind was shortened because
of the holiday and averaged about five
days across most regions. MBN

durum flour were limited last week.
Prices were unchanged.
The price of choice milling hard amber durum as quoted at the Chicago rail
gateway for delivery beyond remained
a nominal $7.10 a bu. The Minneapolis
price was $6.80 a bu. The cash market
was stagnant and has been for at least
the two prior weeks. Timely rail shipments for application against September
contracts and draw on existing stockpiles sustained mill operations.
The durum harvest in the northern
Plains continued to lag the average
pace. The U.S. Department of Agriculture indicated the North Dakota
durum harvest was 34% completed by
Sept. 1 compared with 72% a year ago
and 56% as the recent five-year average for the date. The Montana durum
harvest was 26% completed compared
with 61% a year ago and 62% as the
five-year average.
Untimely rains near the end of the
durum crop development cycle were
disconcerting to millers concerned about
lower falling numbers, sprout damage
and vomitoxin prevalence.
About 90% of pasta manufacturers'
fourth-quarter semolina needs were covered. January-March coverage was estimated at about 50%. MBN
