Bakery Flour
Bookings of bakery flour were limited
last week. Prices were lowered with declining wheat futures a principal consideration.
Most of the activity in flour involved
covering contract components as opposed to flat booking flour. Baker interest in booking basis has perked up
even in the face of unexpected strength
emerging in the cash hard red winter
wheat basis. Cash spring wheat premiums advanced last week but still posed
no significant barrier to spring grade
users. The cash soft red winter wheat
market was expected to remain firm,
and cookie-cracker and specialty bakers
increasingly seemed resigned to the fact.
Individual bakers added to their futures coverage. While nearby millfeed
values were viewed by bakers as frustratingly low, deferred values have risen,
and some bakers have taken advantage
of that strengthening to lock in credits
for the fourth quarter.
Flour distributors, especially in the
Northeast, were active last week booking what supply was required to keep
contract balances extended at least two
weeks and in many cases four.
Bakers' flour coverage through September was solid except for monthly
buyers and distributors. Coverage estimates for the fourth quarter varied according to suppliers, buyers and grades.
Millers estimated pan bread flour coverage for October-December between 50%
and 100%, with average coverage about

Family Flour
Sales of national and regional brands
of family flour were seasonally sluggish.
Carlot list prices were unchanged.
Summer doldrums prevailed. Home
bakers weren't expected to provide a
boost to sales until the approach of the
2019-20 school year and the fall baking
season. At the same time, schools in
some parts of the country will open for
classes in mid-August, so preparations
to accommodate the anticipated increase
in demand were well underway.
Most private label flour buyers earlier covered their flour requirements
through September and were poised to
extend contract balances through the
fourth quarter. MBN

Semolina
Bookings of semolina, granulars and
durum flour were light last week. Price
adjustments were minor.
The price of choice milling hard amber durum as quoted at the Chicago
rail gateway for delivery beyond was a
nominal $7.25 a bu, unchanged from the
previous week.

coverage was estimated at 40% to 60%.
The takeaway was that while coverage
in many instances was well extended for
the date, there was a lot of business yet
to be completed.
Mill grind was between 5½ and 6 days

more than 90% of their semolina needs
through September and about 80% of
their October-December needs. There
remained wide carrying charges to the
first quarter of 2020 from the nearby.
Coverage for January-March 2020 was
estimated at about 20%.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture
indicated 88% of the North Dakota durum crop was headed by July 21 compared with 97% a year ago and 80% as
the recent five-year average for the date.
Nine per cent of the crop was coloring
compared with 45% a year ago and 30%
as the average. The U.S.D.A. rated the
crop's condition at 73% good to excellent, 22% fair and 5% poor. The Montana
crop was 76% headed compared with
85% as the average for the date. The
U.S.D.A. rated the crop's condition at
61% good to excellent (50% a week earlier), 35% fair and 4% poor.
Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada
on July 18 lowered its forecast for the
Canadian 2019 durum crop to 5,000,000
tonnes, down 150,000 tonnes from the
June outlook and down 745,000 tonnes,
or 13%, from 5,745,000 tonnes in 2018.
The lower production forecast resulted
from a smaller planted area estimate following a Statistics Canada survey of producers released on June 28. MBN
