The soft red winter wheat
harvest in the South and
Southeast was nearly completed
by June 28, according to U.S.
Wheat Associates. Quality of
the wheat harvested there was
mostly subpar with the average
grade of 68 of 300 expected
samples at No. 3 SRW because
of test weight averaging 56.9
lbs per bu.

Harvest progress across
the Midwest remained
slow because of recent
precipitation and flooding.

Nestle launching edible
cookie dough
ROSSLYN, VA. - Ten years
after Toll House refrigerated
cookie dough was recalled in
connection with a food-borne
illness outbreak, Nestle USA
has launched two cookie varieties safe
to be eaten
raw. Flagged
"Edible" in
large
print,
the refrigerated
cookie
dough
is
available in chocolate chip
and peanut butter chocolate chip cookie monster. In
June 2009, Nestle recalled
cookie dough after 72 people
in 30 states were sickened
by an E. coli strain linked
to the product. The pathogen eventually was traced
to flour in the dough and
helped generate awareness of
the risks of eating anything
containing raw flour.

Wheat and corn stocks
down from year ago
WASHINGTON - The U.S.
Department of Agriculture in
its June 28 Grain Stocks report
estimated the 2019 wheat
carryover on June 1 at 1,072
million bus, down 2.5% from
June 1, 2018, including 207
million bus on farms, up 58%,
and 865 million bus off farms,
down 11%. Durum stocks
were 55.2 million bus, up 58%.
Corn stocks in all positions
on June 1 were estimated at
5,202 million bus, down 1.9%
from a year earlier, including
2,950 million bus on farms,
up 7%, and 2,253 million
bus off farms, down 12%.
June 1 soybean stocks were
estimated at 1,790 million
bus, up 47% from last year,
with on-farm stocks at 730
million bus, up 94%, and off-

farm stocks at 1,060 million
bus, up 26%.

U.S.D.A. estimates corn
area up 2.9% from 2018
WASHINGTON - The U.S.
Department of Agriculture,
in its June 28 Acreage report,
estimated area planted to
corn in 2019 at 91,700,000
acres, up 2.9% from 2018,
down only 1.2% from March
intentions and well above
trade expectations. Soybean
planted area was estimated
at 80,040,000 acres, down
10% from 2018 and the lowest
since 2013. All wheat planted
area for harvest in 2019 was
estimated at 45,609,000 acres,
down 5% from 2018 and the
lowest on record. Winter wheat
planted area was estimated at
31,778,000 acres, down 2.3%
from last year (including hard
red winter at 22.7 million and
soft red winter at 5.54 million),
durum at 1,401,000 acres,
down 32%, and other spring
wheat at 12,430,000 acres,
down 6% (hard red spring
at 12 million). The U.S.D.A.
estimates for soybeans and
all wheat were below average
trade expectations.

Cookies to be baked
in outer space
MCLEAN, VA. - DoubleTree by Hilton cookies will
be baked aboard the International Space Station later this
year, becoming the first food
baked fresh in outer space,
according to the hotel chain.
The project also involves Zero
G Kitchen, a platform for food
development in space. Mike
Massimino, a former NASA
astronaut who has been on the
space station, has joined the
DoubleTree by Hilton team as
an ambassador for hospitality
in space. The chain is selling a
DoubleTree Cookies in Space
tin of cookies on its web site
and set up a #cookiesinspace hash tag on Twitter. A
