PLANTINGS
Should row crop planting delays
result in a late harvest, farmers
may seed fewer acres to soft
red winter wheat than they
otherwise would. As of May 12,
only 30% of the corn crop and
9% of the soybean crop in the
18 major producing states was
planted versus 66% and 29%
as their respective five-year
averages for the date.

In Ohio, corn was 4%
planted by May 12 versus
47% as the five-year
average progress, and
soybeans were 2% planted
versus 20% as the average.

Bundy Baking Solutions
establishes new business
URBANA, OHIO - Bundy
Baking Solutions has launched
Synova L.L.C., a new business
that will manufacture and distribute release agents for bakeries. Two product lines are
currently available through
Synova. The Supra Pan Bread
Oil portfolio is a pan release
agent designed for baked foods
such as bread, pizza, waffles and
cakes. Equipment release agents
for troughs and other machinery are available through the
Primo Mineral Oil line. Based in
Westerville, Ohio, Synova joins
Bundy Baking Solutions' family
of companies, which includes
American Pan, Chicago Metallic, Pan Glo, RTB and Shaffer.

General Mills achieves
energy goals
MINNEAPOLIS - General
Mills, Inc. has achieved its goal
of improved efficiency and reduced energy consumption,
four years ahead of its plan.
As part of a 10-year goal established in 2012, General Mills set
out to improve energy efficiency
in its 26 largest U.S.-based plants
by 20%. On May 17, the U.S. Department of Energy announced
the Minneapolis-based company had achieved its goal, with a
total efficiency improvement of
20.4% since fiscal 2012. According to General Mills, the 20%
improvement represents a total

of more than 2 million MMBTUs (one million British Thermal Units) of energy (combined
electricity and natural gas). The
company said it completed
more than 60 energy efficiency
and reduction projects across
the company in fiscal 2018. In
total, the improvement projects
saved more than 12 million kWh
(kilowatt hours) and delivered
$4.8 million in cost savings, the
company said.

Vilsack to testify on
climate change
WASHINGTON - Former Secretary of Agriculture Thomas J.
Vilsack will testify May 21 before
the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry
as part of a hearing titled "Climate change and the agriculture
sector." The participation of Mr.
Vilsack, currently president and
chief executive officer of the U.S.
Dairy Export Council, was announced by committee chairman
Senator Pat Roberts
of Kansas and ranking member Debbie
Stabenow of Michigan. Other witnesses include Debbie
Lyons-Blythe, Blythe
Family Farms, White Vilsack
City, Kas.; Frank Mitloehner, professor, Department
of Animal Science, University of
California, Davis; and Matthew
Rezac, Rezac Farms, Weston,
Neb. Before serving as Secretary
of Agriculture from 2009 and
2017, Mr. Vilsack was governor
of Iowa from 1999 to 2007.
