Bakery Flour
Bookings of bakery flour were limited
last week. Prices were raised.
Bakers during the previous couple of
weeks were fully engaged in completing
flour contracts for the fourth quarter, so
much so that little additional JanuaryMarch 2019 coverage was taken. With
many bakers having accomplished goals
for October-December ownership, attention last week increasingly was directed
toward first-quarter and second-quarter
2019 flour needs.
After a couple of busy weeks, bakers'
flour coverage for October-December
ranged from 75% to 100%, flat priced, according to one miller. Coverage for January-March 2019 was estimated at between 30% and 40%, again fully priced.
Some bakers also had at least minimal
flour coverage into April-June. Individual cookie-cracker and specialty bakers
seemed to be more active than bread
bakers in the second quarter.
Many bakers continued to hold positions in wheat futures well into the first
half of 2019. Advancing wheat futures last
week kept bakers considering additional
coverage of the futures component of flour
contracts on the sidelines trying to discern
whether wheat futures had bottomed.
Cash hard red winter wheat premiums strengthened last week. Cash hard
red spring wheat premiums were neutral to bakers considering extending
spring grade coverage. The cash market
for soft red winter wheat was stemmy,
particularly in the East, because of the

Family Flour
Sales of national and regional brands
of family flour increased seasonally. Carlot list prices were unchanged.
Attention was firmly on preparing for
the key fall baking season. It was expected seasonal promotions may begin in
the next few weeks. Most manufacturers
suggested the level of promotion would
be similar to that seen last year. During
the last baking season, it was common
to find 5-lb bags of family flour priced at
two bags for $5 or even $4.
In the market for private label flour,
buyers, including grocery chains, mass
merchandisers and club stores, earlier
extended their flour coverage through
December or even January. MBN

Semolina
Bookings of semolina, granulars and
durum flour were limited last week.
Price adjustments were minor.
The price of choice milling hard amber durum as quoted at the Chicago rail
gateway for delivery beyond remained a
nominal $7.75 a bu. Business in the spot

market remained lacking with mills running comfortably with durum drawn
from inventories and grain being delivered for application against contracts.
This has been the case for the past several months.
Pasta manufacturers earlier covered
nearly 90% of their semolina requirements through December. First-quarter
2019 coverage was estimated at about
60% with some contract balances extending into April-June.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture indicated the North Dakota durum harvest
was 94% completed by Sept. 16, equal to
the year-earlier pace and compared with
74% as the recent five-year average for
the date. The Montana harvest was 85%
completed on Sept. 16 compared with
73% as the average for the date.
Durum millers were pleased with the
overall good quality of the 2018 crop.
Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada on
Sept. 17 estimated the Canadian durum
crop at 5,034,000 tonnes, down 766,000
tonnes from the August outlook but up
72,000 tonnes from 4,962,000 tonnes in
2017. A.A.F.C. forecast Canadian durum
exports in 2018-19 at 4,800,000 tonnes,
unchanged from the August projection and up 387,000 tonnes, or 9%, from
4,413,000 tonnes in 2017-18. MBN

This discouraged Eastern soft flour users
from taking a more aggressive stance to
booking flour.
With wheat futures on the rise, distributors booked only what supply was
needed to keep coverage extended about
two to four weeks forward.
Flour mill grind last week averaged
