Recall involving tainted whey
powder hits grain-based foods
Value, as well as Captain John Derst's
Old Fashioned Bread. The Swiss Rolls
were distributed nationwide, while the
recalled bread was distributed in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina
and South Carolina.
"There is no evidence at this time that
anyone was sickened from one of these
products, or that these products are contaminated," said Scott Gottlieb, M.D.,
commissioner of the Food and Drug
Administration. "These recalls are being initiated because of a potential risk,
and out of an abundance of caution. We
are investigating this potential risk and
closely monitoring whether there are any
reported cases of food related illness associated with any of these products.
"We believe these products may contain
a common whey ingredient supplied by
Associated Milk Producers Inc. (A.M.P.I.),
that may have been contaminated with
Salmonella. As there are likely other food
products made by other manufacturers

that also use this common ingredient,
there may be other recalls initiated in the
coming days. We are also aware that our
partners at the U.S. Department of Agriculture are working with Pinnacle Foods

A.M.P.I. said it is recalling some dry
whey powder sold in 50-lb and 25-kg bags
that was produced at the company's Blair,
Wis., manufacturing plant. The ingredient may be contaminated with Salmonella
and may be the source of recent recalls
initiated by Campbell Soup, Mondelez International and Flowers Foods.

JAB Holding, Krispy Kreme parent,
to acquire Insomnia Cookies
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Through its
Krispy Kreme Doughnut business, JAB
Holding, Luxembourg, is acquiring Insomnia Cookies, New York. Terms of the
transaction were not disclosed.
Insomnia Cookies delivers food to consumers. The company features a menu
that includes such indulgent products as
cookies, ice cream and combinations of the
two. The business initially featured stores
near colleges with the focus on delivering
cookies to students. Since its founding in
2003, the company has expanded to include more than 100 locations.

"At Krispy Kreme, we have an 81-year
heritage of creating the most awesome donut experience imaginable, and today we are
delighted to add Insomnia Cookies,
a rapidly growing business with an
innovative delivery experience and
exceptional product that is beloved
by consumers," said Mike Tattersfield, chief executive officer of
Krispy Kreme Doughnuts.
Insomnia Cookies will operate as a standalone company from Krispy
Kreme, Mr. Tattersfield said.

Canadian baker planning to halt
production of gluten-free bread
ST-MÉTHODE, QUE. - St-Méthode Bakery has announced it will stop supplying
gluten-free bread to grocery stores in
Quebec as of Sept. 1. The company had
offered the bread for the past five years.
"Over the last few years, we have offered our customers the only brand of
fresh, nonfrozen, gluten-free bread distributed throughout Quebec," said Benoit Faucher, president of St-Méthode Bakery. "Today, despite our efforts, we must

unfortunately end production of this line."
In a letter to customers, Mr. Faucher
described a situation in which the cost
to develop the company's bread had
become too expensive. He said the company turned to a new ingredient supplier
in 2016, but the manufacturing costs have
continued to soar.
"After more than a year of effort, despite our many attempts, we have come
to the conclusion that the market of

because product tested positive for Salmonella under A.M.P.I.'s routine test and
hold procedures, the company is recalling product as a precautionary measure.

Wis., dry whey plant, is currently investigating the cause for the positive samples,
and will take all necessary remedial actions."
Consumption of food contaminated
with Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial
foodborne illnesses. The most common
symptoms of salmonellosis are diarrhea,
abdominal cramps and fever within
12 to 72 hours after eating the contaminated product. The illness usually lasts
four to seven days, and most people recover without treatment, according to the
U.S.D.A. In some persons, however, the
diarrhea may be so severe that the patient
needs to be hospitalized. Older adults,
infants and persons with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop
