Dry dairy product prices were steady
to firmer last week as seasonally declining milk supplies overshadowed trade
concerns with China and Mexico. Cheese
prices were mixed, and butter advanced.
High-heat nonfat dry milk (N.D.M.)
prices were unchanged in quiet trading.
Production was matched to contract needs.
Low/medium-heat N.D.M. prices
were raised 1c to 2c a lb. Production
declined due to reduced milk supplies.
Inventories were mixed, ranging from
moderate to heavy to highly committed. Although the price tone was firmer,
many saw the N.D.M. market as unsettled due to tariff issues, which so far has
had less of an impact than expected on
the N.D.M. market.
Dry buttermilk prices were raised 2c a
lb. Production was steady to lighter. Stocks
were tight. Domestic demand and export
demand from Mexico increased. Demand
from bakers and ice cream manufacturers
was fair to good.
Dry whey prices were raised 1c a lb amid
steady production and tight stocks. A recall
of several loads produced in Wisconsin
that may have been contaminated with

Salmonella further tightened supply and
shifted orders to other regions. Demand
exceeded production with strong domestic
sales and ongoing export interest to Asia
noted despite higher tariffs that in some
cases were split between buyer and seller.
Lactose prices also were raised 1c a lb.
Production was steady to lighter, and inventories were tight. Some contracted
shipments were delayed, and buyers in
some cases requested early deliveries.
Prices of 34% whey protein concentrate
were unchanged with a firm undertone.
Production was steady. Both domestic and
global stocks were tight.
Cheese prices were mostly lower. Milk
supplies declined but were sufficient to
maintain mostly steady production at a
fairly active pace. Mozzarella demand was
seasonally light, but demand for other varieties was steady. Stocks were adequate to
heavy and growing in some areas.
Cream supplies were tight amid competition from ice cream manufacturers
and declining milk production. Churning
varied from active to slower. Butter stocks
were adequate to heavy. Retail sales were
steady to slow while food service, restaurant and ingredient sales improved. MBN
