U.S.D.A. RAISES WINTER
WHEAT FORECAST TO
1.2 BILLION BUS
The U.S.D.A. on June 12
forecast soft red winter wheat
production in 2018 at 316
million bus, up slightly from the
May outlook and up 24 million
bus, or 8%, from 292 million bus
in 2017. The U.S.D.A. raised its
forecasts for Illinois, Missouri
and Ohio but lowered forecasts
for Michigan and Indiana.

The U.S.D.A. forecast the
Ohio wheat crop at 37.1
million bus versus 36.2
million as the May outlook
and 32.2 million bus in 2017.

Sanders, senior vice-president,
government relations and public affairs for the American
Bakers Association. "Bakers
and other food manufacturers
can now begin to move forward with labeling updates as
part of the Nutrition Facts Label (N.F.L.) revisions final rule
compliance efforts." The compliance date for the F.D.A.'s
new Nutrition Facts Label is
Jan. 1, 2020, for manufacturers
with $10 million or more in annual food sales and Jan. 1, 2021,
for smaller manufacturers.

Honey Smacks recalled
due to Salmonella risk
BATTLE CREEK, MICH. -
Kellogg Co. on June 14 initiated
a voluntary recall of 1.1 million boxes of 15.3-oz and 23-oz
packages of its Honey Smacks
cereal, citing the "potential
presence of Salmonella." Kellogg said it has launched an investigation with the third-party
manufacturer who produces
Honey Smacks. The affected
products include 23-oz boxes
distributed in the United States
with a "Best if Used By Date" of
June 14, 2018, through June 14,
2019, as well as 15.3-oz boxes
distributed in Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, the Caribbean,
Guam, Tahiti and Saipan with a
"Best if Used By Date" of June
14, 2018, through June 14, 2019.

G.M. wheat detected
in Canada
OTTAWA - The Canadian Food
Inspection Agency (C.F.I.A.) on
June 14 released a statement
indicating it has discovered genetically modified wheat near
a small access road in southern
Alberta. The C.F.I.A. determined
the Alberta wheat sample was
a match for a Monsanto G.M.
wheat line that was used in
multiple confined research field
trials in the late 1990s and early
2000s in both Canada and the
United States. The C.F.I.A. noted
that no evidence was present to
suggest that the G.M. wheat was

present anywhere other than the
isolated site where it was discovered. In addition, Health Canada
has concluded that the finding
does not pose a food safety risk.
The C.F.I.A.'s findings did not
necessarily ease concern among
the export community, though.
The Japanese farm ministry on
June 15 said it has suspended its
tender and sale of wheat from
Canada until it is able to confirm
that the Canadian wheat that it
buys contains no G.M.O.s.

Hostess debuts
Jumbo Donettes
KANSAS CITY - Hostess Brands, L.L.C. last week
launched Hostess Jumbo Donettes in two varieties: glazed
and chocolate iced
with
sprinkles.
The Jumbo Donettes are available in a resealable
tub featuring six individually-wrapped
donuts. The product's
packaging includes pop-culture
infused quotes such as "If loving
donuts is wrong, I don't want to
be right." Becky Logan, brand
director of breakfast at Hostess,
said the company hopes to bring
"freshness" to the packaged
donut category with the new
Jumbo Donettes packaging.

John Buhler takes over
at Butter Buds
RACINE, WIS. - John Buhler
has been named president of
Butter Buds Food Ingredients.
The change comes as Bill Buhler
steps down and moves toward
retirement, although he will continue as president emeritus and
will be involved in special projects within the family-owned
company. Racine-based Butter
Buds Food Ingredients manufactures concentrated dairy flavors
made from fresh butter, cream
