The U.S. Department of Justice says Bayer AG
must divest businesses and assets collectively
worth about $9 billion before it will approve the
$66 billion acquisition.

Even following a sharp correction last week,
Kansas City wheat futures remained about
$1 a bu above prices a year earlier. Concerns
about the condition of the 2017 winter
wheat crop at the start of this year's harvest
have prompted a sharp increase in volatility,
exacerbated by worries about crop problems
elsewhere, especially Russia. Wheat prices
have been trending higher since late last
summer, generally reflecting unrelenting
dryness last fall, through the winter and most
of the spring.
While concerns about the wheat crop
and then row crop conditions invariably will
factor heavily in grain markets during the
weeks ahead, foreign currencies have been
influential as well, providing a bit of a counter
force in recent weeks. The value of the Euro
versus the U.S. dollar had been declining
steadily, in large part because of crises in two
European Union member countries - Spain
and Italy. While the Euro rallied late in the
week amid signs Italy's worst political crisis
in years was abating somewhat, conditions
in neither nation were fully settled and the
risk of further swings was considerable.
The weak Euro has put some pressure on
U.S. wheat markets as have weak currencies
in Russia and Brazil. Questions about China's
currency as well as rising U.S. interest rates,
the impact of the escalating trade tensions
(and the apparent implosion of NAFTA
negotiations) underscore the wide range of
forces demanding attention and the degree
to which grain prices this summer will be
driven by far more than weather alone. MBN
